What’s this all about?
My name is Ron and I live in Bellingham, Washington.
I’ve had a distinguished career and have held many senior positions in financial services companies. I’ve managed big budgets, many people, and always was a top performer. Best of all, I got along with everyone and was absolutely 100% fair in all my dealings with employees and bosses. A former report of mine once told me I was his best boss ever: “you were tough, but always fair”.
The parent company of the last company I worked for declared bankruptcy in early 2004. I have not worked since.
I have banged many head against too many brick walls. I understand what happens. And if you are someone who has practiced age discrimination even unintentionally, just understand that there will a day when you will be enlightened.
My tone is pretty bitter. How do you think I feel when I email a resume (as requested) and search the name until I see a picture, and it’s a 20 or 30 year old person who reviews the resume? How would you feel?
Look at this picture used in training firms to show firms how to avoid age discrimination litigation.
This was a firm’s advertising image. What is the message? Tell me.
Here’s what the law (Age Discrimination In Employment Act) says:
Job ads or recruitment materials cannot mention age or say that a certain age is preferred
Tell me about the appearance of the pharmaceutical reps that march in waves into your doctor’s office while you wait. Ever see on over 50?
It’s BS, but you can never prove it.
Employers know if they just ignore your application they can defend their actions in any court.
I am discriminated against by employers every day as I seek work. This is a silent discrimination. This is real.
For those of you under the age of 50, you will find out soon enough. For those of us who are baby boomers, well we know what this is all about.
I’m an expert. I’m 60 and need a job.
Maybe I shouldn’t say all boomers know because I’m sure some of you are in the same job for many years and have not had the pleasure of being a job seeker since passing the half century mark. I’ve have found some boomers have this “holier than thou” attitude and say “well, just get a job” or something similar. I wish it was that simple because it’s not. If you are one of these asses with attitude, then call the [[AARP]] and ask them if age discrimination is real. It’s silent and very real.
This blog is my opportunity to vent my frustrations. I’m past the point of caring about whether or not someone gets pissed because I name them in my posts. So be it.
